Bunions Q & A

What are bunions?

A bunion is a deformity affecting the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint connecting your big toe to your foot. A bunion occurs when the two bones making up your MTP joint move apart instead of remaining in a straight line.

As your MTP joint bones move apart, they push out from the side of your big toe. This movement also forces your big toe in the opposite direction (towards your little toes). As a result, the big toe may overlap the next toe. Eventually, this joint movement creates a bony bump.

Bunions and hammertoes — a foot deformity in which one of your smaller toes bends down at the middle joint — can occur together; many with pronounced bunions also have multiple hammertoes.

What symptoms do bunions cause?

The primary symptom of bunions is the large bump. That bump can cause some serious issues, including:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Difficulty wearing shoes
  • Poor big toe flexibility
  • Corns and calluses where your toe overlaps

You may notice some bunion symptoms even before you have a bump. For example, you might notice progressive stiffness and soreness at the bottom of your big toe. It’s always best to see Dr. Soleymani early, when your symptoms first begin, as treatment’s easiest at that phase.

How are bunions treated?

If you seek treatment early, Dr. Soleymani can help you prevent or delay bunion progression with orthotics, splinting, taping, and other non-surgical techniques. For any pronounced bunion that causes serious symptoms, surgery may be the best solution.

Surgery is the only way to repair the deformity for long-term correction. Dr. Soleymani is a bunion surgery expert who uses advanced surgical techniques to repair the deformity. He can remove the bump, restore toe alignment, and correct the balance within your foot to prevent bunion recurrence.

Dr. Soleymani conceals incisions seamlessly within your foot anatomy, making scars virtually invisible after bunion surgery.

Dr. Soleymani understands that you may fear intense pain after bunion surgery. He can minimize your pain using special presurgical planning and skillful surgical techniques—Cedars Foot and Ankle Center patients who have bunion surgery often report a pain-free experience. Most people return home the day of their bunion surgery.

If you have hammertoes with bunions, Dr. Soleymani can usually correct both problems during the same surgery.
